The Fertility Diet

The Fertility Diet can boost fertility and increase your odds of getting pregnant

If you’re wondering how to boost your fertility and get pregnant faster, Texas Fertility Center San Antonio wants you to know that you aren’t alone. The physicians at our San Antonio fertility center hear this question every day, and their answer is to embrace health and wellness. With the start of a new year, why not resolve to try a new diet that will make a difference?

The Nurses’ Health Study designed the Fertility Diet to be simple and effective

If you’re looking for a natural way to boost fertility, research from the Nurses’ Health Study suggests that the Fertility Diet is a helpful choice. We like the diet because it’s backed by research and easy to follow, with 10 simple guidelines.

  1. Avoid trans fats. Fans of sweets will have to cut back on treats like cookies and cakes.
  2. Use unsaturated vegetable oils. Consider using olive oil or canola oil when you cook.
  3. Add more vegetable protein to your diet. You’ll want to eat more beans and nuts.
  4. Select “good” carbohydrates. Some great options include oatmeal, beans and veggies. Some not-so-great options are pasta, rice and white bread.
  5. Make dairy a part of your diet. The best choices are whole milk or full-fat yogurt.
  6. Take a daily multivitamin. Make sure it includes folic acid and B vitamins.
  7. Boost your iron intake. Dried apricots, spinach and beans are great sources of iron, but avoid red meat.
  8. Drink more water and avoid soft drinks and limit your intake of coffee and tea.
  9. Keep your body weight in the fertility zone. The fertility zone is a BMI of 20 to 24. However, for some women, simply losing 5 to 10% of body weight can boost fertility.
  10. Exercise every day. Just be sure to avoid exercising excessively.

Our fertility specialists have one more tip for patients

You’ve probably heard it before, but the physicians at our San Antonio fertility center think it’s worth repeating – avoid smoking. Many studies have found that women who smoke take longer to get pregnant and are more likely to experience miscarriages and other complications. It can be challenging, but there are resources available to help you quit smoking and improve your health.
