The egg retrieval is performed in the Methodist Hospital IVF surgery center next to San Antonio IVF and down the hall from our TFC-SA office.
The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes, and you will receive IV sedation so that you will not feel or remember the procedure. A very small caliber surgical needle will be passed alongside the ultrasound probe through the top of the vagina into the ovary. This is all done under ultrasound guidance. The eggs are aspirated from the follicles and taken immediately into the IVF laboratory where they are identified and placed into culture in specially designed incubators.
While you are having your eggs retrieved, your partner will be asked to produce a semen specimen. His sperm are then prepared and approximately 5 hours after the retrieval, a highly concentrated fraction of motile sperm are placed into a microscopic drop of fluid containing a single egg (insemination) or a single sperm is injected directly into each egg (intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI). The eggs are then placed back into the incubator, where fertilization will hopefully take place over the next 18 hours.
You will stop taking all medication after your retrieval, and you should have a period approximately 10-14 days later.
