Scheduling your semen analysis
A semen analysis is a baseline study of the health and viability of a man’s sperm. After a consult with one of our San Antonio fertility doctors, we will usually recommend scheduling your semen analysis with our andrology lab.
Steps for scheduling your semen analysis
Step 1: When your doctor recommends a semen analysis to be performed, you will need to call Ovation® Fertility at 210-858-3360 to schedule an appointment.
Step 2: Make an appointment with the lab at a time convenient for you. Appointments can be made Monday through Friday. Samples may be collected at home and brought into the lab for drop-off, or can be collected on site at Ovation’s testing facility. The laboratory must have staff available to analyze the sample at just the right time, so scheduling your semen analysis is critical. Appointments are required and cannot be “walk-in.”
Step 3: Make sure you have a collection cup from Ovation or Texas Fertility Center if you are collecting at home. Abstinence is required for two to five days prior to the collection, so please abstain from ejaculation for the 48 hours prior to your appointment. When you arrive at the lab for your appointment
Proper specimen and patient identification is a critical component of good laboratory practice. Therefore, you will need to provide the Ovation receptionist with your photo ID for the specimen to be received and processed.
Payment in full will be required at your appointment time. Please confirm with Ovation about the anticipated costs for your testing, and whether your insurance plan is contracted with Ovation. If needed, Ovation can provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, if you have coverage for a semen analysis.
Sample collection information
- In order to have an accurate analysis, you should abstain from ejaculation for two to five days before your appointment.
- Specific instructions for collection of a specimen will be provided to you when scheduling your semen analysis.
Depending on your proximity to the Ovation andrology lab, you have two options to choose from when scheduling your semen analysis.
Home collection
You may collect a semen specimen at home and bring it into the laboratory if you prefer. In order to do this, you must live no further than one hour from the office, as specimen quality deteriorates after this time. You must obtain an appropriate specimen cup from TFC San Antonio, Ovation, or your ordering physician’s office, as specimens that arrive in an unsterile or unsanitary condition cannot be accepted for testing.
Office collection
Alternatively, you can collect your specimen at Ovation, especially if you live more than an hour from the laboratory. Ovation has made every effort to make the collection process private, professional and comfortable.
