It may be time to consider blending acupuncture and fertility treatment

Erika Munch, MD, and Susan Hudson, MD, have been reviewing studies about acupuncture and fertility – and they have some exciting news to share. Acupuncture could help some patients when used in conjunction with fertility treatments at our San Antonio fertility center.
Acupuncture and fertility treatments – a time-tested combination
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for centuries to treat different ailments. When used for fertility, the practice involves placing tiny needles along specific meridian points linked to the reproductive system. The ultimate goal is to regulate hormones, reduce inflammation and improve circulation. Some patients even report stress reduction.
These findings have led more fertility specialists to suggest combining acupuncture and fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization, IVF, and ovarian stimulation. Currently, the practice is being used to address the following fertility issues:
- Elevated levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Luteal phase defect
- Ovulation induction
- Unexplained infertility in men and women
The physicians at our San Antonio fertility center want you to understand that acupuncture won’t work for every patient. It is not effective for women with damage to their reproductive organs or certain structural problems. It also does not work well for men who have problems with sperm quality.
