Wondering when to see a fertility specialist?
When faced with month after month of negative pregnancy tests, many couples think that they should just keep trying on their own. Others can hear their biological clocks ticking as they keep trying to have a baby without success – and they wonder when to see a fertility specialist. The team from our San Antonio fertility center offers guidelines to help you determine when to make that first fertility appointment.
Expert guidance on when to see a fertility specialist
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) makes it easy to know when to see a fertility specialist. The team from our San Antonio fertility center has included these recommendations below for your convenience:
- If you are under the age of 35, you should schedule an appointment with a fertility specialist if you have been unable to conceive after having regular, unprotected sex for one year.
- If you are 35 or older, time is of the essence because female fertility declines with age. This means you should visit a fertility specialist after six months of trying to conceive.
- If you know that you have a condition that could negatively affect your fertility, you should see a fertility specialist as soon as you’re thinking about trying to become pregnant, regardless of your age.
Why it’s important not to wait
Being proactive about your fertility often gives you more fertility treatment options. For example, a woman who is struggling with infertility may be able to conceive with help from fertility medications and intrauterine insemination (IUI) in her late-20s or early-30s. In contrast, she may need in vitro fertilization (IVF) with or without donor eggs if she waits until her late-30s or 40s to visit a fertility specialist.
