Ovarian Disorders

Rely on our San Antonio fertility doctors to diagnose and treat ovarian disorders

Most hopeful parents understand that the ovaries play an important role in female fertility. But many people aren’t familiar with the different ovarian disorders that can interfere with plans of parenthood. Our San Antonio fertility doctors are well-versed in the different disorders of the ovary, and can simplify what is often an overwhelming situation.

Using their experience and knowledge, our fertility specialists can diagnose and treat ovarian disorders. They also work hard to educate people about problems that can affect the ovaries.

Understanding how the ovaries work

Before learning more about ovarian disorders, it’s important to know how the ovaries work. Most women have two ovaries, which are part of the reproductive system.

  • These small structures are on either side of the uterus at the end of each fallopian tube.
  • Ovaries store, produce and release a woman’s eggs.

A woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. At puberty, her body begins to ovulate (release an egg). Each month, the body typically releases one egg. By the time menopause occurs, no functional eggs remain, and menstrual cycles stop.

A look at common ovarian disorders and their treatments

There are several common disorders of the ovary that can affect your fertility.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine or hormone disorder that can cause irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, acne, weight gain and abnormal hair growth. Ovarian stimulation and treatments such as IUI and IVF can help patients with PCOS conceive.
  • Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) is when the number or quality of eggs that remain is low, which can be associated with reduced reproductive potential.
  • Premature ovarian insufficiency occurs when a woman enters menopause before age 40. For patients with this diagnosis who are no longer ovulating, egg donation can help make motherhood possible.
  • Ovarian cysts come in many varieties. Some can interfere with fertility, while others do not. For this reason, the need for and type of treatment for ovarian cysts varies.

How are disorders of the ovary diagnosed?

If one of our San Antonio fertility doctors suspects you have an ovarian disorder, they will order testing to confirm the diagnosis. The types of testing will likely include bloodwork and an ultrasound. With a diagnosis in hand, your doctor will work with you to create a customized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals.

Because some ovarian disorders may influence other aspects of health besides the reproductive system, our San Antonio fertility doctors may also make referrals to other specialists when necessary. For example, patients with PCOS may benefit from also working with professionals such as registered dietitians and dermatologists.
